Work experience changes for tradespersons for offshore General Skilled Migration (GSM)
Prior to 1 January 2010, tradespersons who had studied in Australia for two years, in order to meet the Australian Study Requirement, could apply for an offshore GSM visa:

  • Skilled - Independent (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 175)

  • Skilled - Sponsored (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 176)

  • Skilled - Regional Sponsored (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 475)

and were exempted from recent work experience requirements.

From 1 January 2010, applicants nominating a trade occupation under one of the offshore GSM visa subclasses will no longer get this exemption.

Applicants nominating a trade occupation and applying for one of the above visa subclasses will be required to have at least 12 months work experience in a skilled occupation in the 24 months immediately prior to applying.

These changes do not affect applicants nominating non-trade occupations.
