English language changes for General Skilled Migration (GSM)

Over the last couple of years the Department has implemented tougher English language ability criteria for applicants applying for GSM visas.

Changes to the offshore GSM program have already been running for some time.

Prior to 1 January 2010 applicants applying onshore for GSM visas who nominated a trade occupation were not required to meet the same levels of English language ability criteria as other GSM applicants.

From 1 January 2010, applicants applying for GSM visas who nominate a trade occupation will be required to meet the same English language ability criteria applicable to all GSM applicants.

All GSM applicants will have to provide evidence of competent English as a minimum. If applicants are holders of passports from the United Kingdom, Ireland, the USA, Canada or New Zealand they are not required to sit an English test.

If applicants do not hold one of the aforementioned passports, they must obtain at least 6 in each of the 4 IELTS bands (reading, writing, listening & speaking) in a test conducted not more than 2 years before the day on which the application was lodged.
