When is the Australian Financial Year? The Australian fiscal year runs from 1 July to 30 June the following year.
What are Income Tax Rates in Australia? Companies are taxed at a flat rate of 30% while individuals are taxed at progressive rates.

How do I apply for a Tax File Number? A tax file number (TFN) is a unique number issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to individuals and organisations. It is not compulsory to have a TFN, however, if you do not have one you may have more tax witheld than necessary or be unable to receive government benefits.

What is Medicare and how do I enrol? Medicare is Australia's publicly funded universal health care system. Australian tax residents have to pay a 1.5% tax surcharge known as the Medicare levy to assist in funding the Medicare program. Medicare assists with basic health services. If you require more comprehensive cover you will need to join a private health insurance fund.
To enrol in Medicare, you should attend a Medicare office about 7 to 10 days after arrival in Australia. You should take your passport and visa evidence with you.

I am an Australian temporary resident, am I eligible to receive Medicare benefits? In most cases you are not entitled to full Medicare cover. If you are in Australia and have applied for a permanent visa (excludes an application for a parent visa) you may be eligible for Medicare cover by providing evidence of having applied for permanent residency.
Reciprocal Health Care Agreements have been signed with some countries entitling residents of these countries to limited Medicare cover. These countries are New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Norway, Malta and Italy.
Certain temporary residents such as spouses of Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents may be eligible for Medicare.
In all cases you should contact Medicare directly to determine your eligibility for cover.

What is Centrelink and how do I register? Centrelink is Australia's welfare agency. It supports those in need. Most newly arrived migrants cannot access social security or certain other Centrelink services. However, you may be eligible for Family Assistance payments to help with the cost of raising children.
Centrelink also supports jobseekers with a range of services and programs.
To register for Centrelink, you should attend a Centrelink office after arrival in Australia. You should take your passport and visa evidence with you.
If your visa was subject to an Assurance of Support, you should notify Centrelink when registering.
In all cases you should contact Centrelink directly to determine the services and programs applicable to you.
